Solomons' police look for community help to limit kwaso production

The police in Solomon Islands say a string of raids in recent months has done little to reduce the production of kwaso.

The police say they've been seizing thousands of dollars worth of the illegal liquor and distilling apparatus from residential homes almost every week.

The Acting Police commissioner Walter Kola told the Solomon Star newspaper that although kwaso production is rooted deep in communities, partnerships with police will eventually eradicate the trouble makers.

He says kwaso contributes to social problems such as disorderly behaviour, and can damage the health of young people.
