Vanuatu quarry owner protest called off

4:10 pm on 3 February 2010

Quarry owners on the main Vanuatu island of Efate have called off plans to protest during a ceremony tomorrow marking progress on the new ring road being built with aid assistance from the United States.

They cancelled the protest plan after the Minister of Land, Paul Telukluk, promised them on Tuesday that outstanding royalty payments would be made by tomorrow.

The quarry owners had intended boycotting the ceremony and had threatened to block the road with felled trees.
