Updating of electoral roll is underway in Solomon Islands

8:18 pm on 4 February 2010

Voter registration is now underway in Solomon Islands with officials in bright orange t-shirts visiting houses to check the details of eligible voters.

The Chief Electoral Officer, Polycarp Haununu, says Government funding to pay the registration officials arrived at the Electoral Commission on Wednesday this week.

In the first 60 days of the registration exercise officials are going from house to house to remove from the roll the names of people who have died or moved, and to register new voters.

Mr Haununu says the Commission is striving to ensure the process runs smoothly so that every Solomon Islander over the age of 18 is registered with one name and in one locality in time for this year's election.
