Fiji's interim prime minister Frank Bainimarama is reported to have announced that he will retire in 2014.

The Fiji Time reports that Commodore Bainimarama made the statement while visiting the village of Dawadama in the province of Ra.

Commodore Bainimarama seized power in the 2006 coup and has set 2014 as a date to hold elections.

He called on villagers in Dawadamu to support the government that will come into power in 2014 in the same manner he had been received.

Commodore Bainimarama said he was pleased the province had changed its stance to support him, recalling how the military was stopped from entering the province two years ago.

He said the tour of the province was not a vote-buying exercise.
