On going attempts in Samoa to capture a mongoose seen in the Aleipata area on Upolu island has been successful.

One male mongoose was found dead inside a trap especially built in New Zealand.

The Ministry of Environment's CEO says an investigation is now being carried out to find how the animal entered the country.

Our correspondent in Samoa, Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia, says a source in the ministry believes the mongoose was able to enter Samoa through containers of relief supplies.

"Most of these containers that were brought in for relief supplies for the tsunami they were not checked, once they arrived they were quickly delievered to those affected villages."

Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia says usual import standards were dropped during the emergency.
