Commuters in Solomon Islands upset at shorter bus routes

Commuters in Solomon Islands using public buses in Honiara are appalled at the unannounced short routes bus operators have recently introduced.

Bus operators introduced the shorter routes, without any formal announcement, early this year.

Some commuters are now having to take up to four buses to reach their destination.

The Solomon Star reports bus operators as saying said the public's negative response to the approved $3 and $4 bus fare forced them to introduce the new shorter routes.

More than a year ago when fuel prices kept rising, the City Council and bus owners agreed on $4 bus fare for adults and $2 for students and children.

But most commuters refused to pay $4 and were only handing $2 to bus conductors.

Bus operator Ron Jamakana told the newspaper the public must understand they also have bills to pay.
