Samoa MP calls for lashing of sex offenders

12:33 pm on 25 February 2010

A Samoan MP Muagututagata Peter Ah Him has called for sex offenders to be given two to three lashes for every month of their jail sentence.

Muagututagata, who is also the associate minister of the Ministry of Communication and Technology, says he would like the public to support such a change of the law.

He raised his concerns on TV1 where he spoke of the increase in reported sex offences, such as incest, adding lashes to the imprisonment term should highlight the seriousness of such crime.

Muagututagata had previously raised the issue in parliament.

His comment comes after an incest victim has gone public explaining how she was sexually attacked and living in an environment of fear and distress.
