French Polynesian minister to visit Marquesas after tsunami

French Polynesia's transport minister, Louis Frebault, is to spend three days in the Marquesas islands to assess the damage caused to coastal infrastructure by the tsunami.

The tsunami following the 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Chile generated several waves that hit Hiva Oa and Nuku Hiva, with the highest measuring four metres.

The waves caused no injuries and reports say the swirling sea damaged sea walls and two small vessels.

The disturbance of the sea lasted for several hours, which prompted the authorities to maintain the alert for longer than in the other archipelagos..
