Fiji Red Cross volunteers have stepped in to support efforts to contain a worsening typhoid outbreak.

55 people have been infected in the past week, bringing the total number of thyphoid sufferers to 99.

The ministry of health suspects a water source as well as contaminated food to be the source for the bacterial infection.

The Red Cross director general, Alison Cupit, says about 50 volunteers are supporting health teams to raise community awareness about the illness.

"We promised them resources, we give them trucks, going out issuing the soap and the hygienic washes for their hands, and spreading the word and posters with our volunteers, giving manpower."

Alison Cupit says her staff are also distributing fresh water containers to the affected areas.
