It is estimated that an average of two teachers are retiring every day in Fiji because they have reached the retirement age of 55 years.

The general secretary of the Fijian Teachers Association, Maika Namudu told the Fiji Village website that although they do not have the exact figures, more and more qualified teachers are leaving the public education sector.

Mr Namudu says many retiring teachers are trying to pursue their careers overseas.

The interim government in Fiji lowered the public service retirement age to 55 in April last year.
