Habitat for Humanity NZ plans aid drive for Aitutaki

2:39 pm on 3 March 2010

Habitat for Humanity New Zealand is planning a house building programme to help the victims of Cyclone Pat in Aitutaki in the Cook Islands.

It intends working with Cook Islands volunteers on a programme similar to that it's carrying out in tsunami-ravaged Samoa.

The organisation's Samoa Project Manager, Lou Maea, has returned from a visit to Aitutaki, where he met government officials and other disaster response agencies, who he says were very enthusiastic about the plan.

Next week, Habitat New Zealand's CEO, Pete North, is also to meet Cook Islands government officials and other organisations to advance the project.

Meanwhile, Habitat has launched an appeal to raise 200,000 US dollars for facilitating its Cook Islands rebuilding programme.
