Hiva Oa may be declared disaster zone after tsunami damage assessment

French Polynesia's transport minister, Louis Frebault, has asked the government to declare the island of Hiva Oa a disaster area following last week's tsunami.

Several surges of up to four metres hit the Marquesas islands after the 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Chile, damaging port structures.

A government statement says steep coastal banks were damaged by the water masses that swirled into the bays for several hours.

No figure has been given of the damage but the minister says many areas need repairs or consolidation.
