Need for huge rebuilding of cyclone hit homes in Aitutaki in Cook Islands

Habitat for Humanity New Zealand says any rebuilding project on Aitutaki in the Cook Islands will need to be on a massive scale.

Lou Maea, who is the organisation's Samoa Project Manager was recently on Aitutaki to assess the damage there following Cyclone Pat.

Mr Maea says he found various grades of damage to homes; grade one involves only minor damage but grade four means a house needs to be pulled down.

"So there is a mixture of all of those in each village that we saw although its a very small island approximately 9 kilometres long and two at its widest point. In terms of the damage it is certainly at the same scale as it was in Samoa but the difference between Aitutaki and Samoa was that there was no loss of life."

Lou Maea says they haven't been officially invited to be part of they rebuilding phase but he says they were well received by locals and government officials.

This week Habitat New Zealand's CEO, Pete North, will meet Cook Islands government officials and other organisations.
