Environmentalists in Papua New Guinea are hopeful a park in Port Moresby won't be developed after a Supreme Court decision.

It has allowed a review of the commercial rezoning of a popular recreation ground.

The National Capital District Commission last year sought a review of the Lands Minister's approval of Unagi Park's rezoning, prompting two companies to challenge the review.

A Papua New Guinea environmental and human rights campaigner, Dorothy Tekwie, says people are confident the park will return to recreational use.

"To give this park back to the custody of the National Capital District Commission, it is actually justice for the people. You should have seen the joy on people last festive season. It was every night for one month, almost two months, they just enjoyed the place and not one incident of law and order problem, with so huge crowd gathering at night and still there was no problem."
