Northern islands in Fiji begin to feel effects of Cyclone Tomas

Another cyclone in the region, Cyclone Tomas, is beginning to affect the Northern Group of islands in Fiji, including the second largest island Vanua Levu.

Gale force winds of up to 65 kilometres an hour are being felt.

But the main force of the storm is not expected until later in the day

Tomas is still strengthening and is likely to grow into a Category four or even five cyclone.

It is currently moving slowly at 10 kilometres an hour in a south southwest direction.

The acting director of the Fiji Disaster Management Office, Pajiliai Dobui, says since Thursday they have been warning people in the Central Division and the flood prone areas of Vanua Levu to move to higher ground.

Farmers have also been advised to move stock to higher ground.
