The Solomon Islands government has asked the European Union to pay for the resettlement of some of its Polynesian people living on outlying atolls.
The government's asked for more than 656,000 US dollars to resettle the just over one thousand Polynesians who live on Malaita Province's Pelau and Luaniua Atolls, some of whom have already settled on Guadacanal and in the capital, Honiara.
The Solomon Star newspaper reports that the European Union is finalising arrangements to resettle the islanders.
The EU's representative in Honiara says the body is considering a specific allocation for Solomon Islands under the Global Climate Change Alliance.
Melanesians living on small islands in Guadalcanal, Western and Temotu Provinces are also affected by climate change.
