Cyclone Ului expected to affect Solomon Islands until at least Thursday

Cyclone Ului is now expected to continue battering Solomons Islands for another two or three days.

The category four cyclone is moving only very slowly and is maintaining its strength.

The Director of Solomon's Meteorological Service, David Hiriasia, says the area the cyclone is covering has increased.

He says the warnings now cover provinces to the north and they will continue for some time:

"We've continued to tell the public it's not over yet, especially the gusts and the heavy rainfall at times that we are experiencing. We expect to know the bad weather associated with the system to still persist to late Thursday or even Friday."

Mr Hiriasia says there are very rough sea conditions everywhere and ships are sheltering from the cyclone.

He says the province of Rennell and Bellona to the south has been suffering severe winds since Sunday night.
