Calls for American Samoa's government to ensure last cannery remains

8:53 am on 18 March 2010

The American Samoa House Commerce Committee says the government must do all it can to keep the Star Kist Samoa cannery in the territory.

The committee met yesterday to discuss follow up action on its hearing last week on the state of economy and decided the first priority is to help Star Kist Samoa maintain its local operations.

The lawmakers say there's consensus that the government should ensure the cannery gets incentives to stay processing in the territory.

The committee chairman, Alexander Jennings, says it will call in officials of Star Kist to learn their plans and what they need in terms of assistance from the Government.
