Strike at closed French Polynesian hotel

1:24 pm on 22 March 2010

Employees of the Tahiti Hilton Hotel in French Polynesia have begun an unlimited strike in protest at the redundancy provisions offered by the hotel's local owner.

The hotel, which was to stay open until the end of the month, closed at the weekend with the last guests leaving.

According to RFO radio, the O Oe To Oe Rima union has set up pickets outside the hotel in Papeete and threatened to broaden the strike to other hotels owned by Louis Wane and three supermarkets.

Meanwhile, Air France cabin and ground staff in French Polynesia have also threatened to strike from Friday, saying the company has failed to honour work agreements.
