Niue to get internet bandwith boost

12:18 pm on 23 March 2010

The people of Niue are about to get a four-fold increase in internet bandwidth provided for free by the Internet Users Society Niue.

The Society, which has long provided free internet to the island as a form of compensation for the control of the island's dot-nu domain name, will also ensure extra security through a back-up satellite for the island's internet connections.

The Society's Boston-based president, Bill Semich, says the guaranteed bandwidth will this week increase from one megabit a second to four megabits a second.

He says later this year the Society will fund an additional two megabits a second from an alternative satellite provider, to give a six-fold increase in guaranteed capacity.

The greater bandwidth will allow the Society to extend WiFi coverage to some of the island's outer villages.
