Water issues after cyclone pose health risks in Fiji

UNICEF-Pacific says stagnant water and polluted drinking water in some areas of Fiji continue to pose health risks for the communities affected by cyclone Tomas.

Fiji is experiencing a typhoid outbreak with 114 people affected since early this year and health officials are worried about a possible increase following the cyclone.

There was concern that a group of villagers in the Labasa area suffer from typhoid but the ministry of health says there's no clinical evidence to support this.

UNICEF's Emmanuelle Abrioux says concern remains about the spread of water-borne illnesses as many communities are on the move.

"There's a concern that there're a number of cases that obviously with a lack of readily accessible portable drinking water and as well with some flooding, which still remains in some of the communities, that water-borne diseases are going to spread. And typhoid which was already prevalent and a risk prior to the cyclone is our key focus at this moment."
