WHO urges new approach to ensure food security

The World Health Organisation says a multi-sectoral approach is needed to ensure food security in the Pacific region.

Dr Chen Ken, who is the WHO representative for the Pacific region, says country leaders have already held a number of talks on the topic as have regional organisations and UN organisations, like the FAO.

But he hopes next month's Pacific Food Summit in Vanuatu will attract a wide range of delegates who can help formulate a Pacific Framework of Action for small island states.

"Because we must all recognise that dealing with the food security issue we need a multi sector approach. We need to work together. This issue also connects us with the West. And many other things like climate change, globalisation, urbanisation, and the global financial crisis, all those things together."

Dr Chen Ken says six nations have already formed their own plan of action and will share it at the upcoming regional summit in Vanuatu which begins on April 21.
