Gaffe about Guam causes trouble for US politician

A United States politician is in trouble after suggesting the military build up on Guam could cause it to capsize.

Representative Hank Johnson made the comment during a House Armed Services Committee hearing last Thursday.

CBS news reports, in a discussion regarding the buildup on the Pacific island, Mr Johnson expressed some concerns about the plans.

He said his fear was that the whole island would become so populated that it would tip over and capsize.

But he has been lampooned for his remarks, and a spokesman has had to clarify he meant that he is concerned the influx of military personnel will overwhelm the island's infrastructure and ecosystem.
