Catering for PNG soldiers in doubt

6:10 am on 12 April 2010

Soldiers in Papua New Guinea's military barracks may have to start cooking for themselves.

The newspaper, the National, says the catering firm Nationwide Catering Service has told senior PNG Defence Force officials the last meal for soldiers would be dinner served at the weekend.

The catering firm says the Defence Department owes it about three million US dollars in outstanding bills.

Defence officials say the figure is lower.

Last November, the company had threatened to shut down the messing facilities, but the Treasury Department then released just over a million dollars.
