The trial of a 21 year man in Fiji on rape charges has been transferred to the High Court after a hearing in the Magistrates Court in Suva today.
Petero Bai is charged with raping an eight girl at a Suva school last month and the state prosecutor says they will be seeking the maximum penalty, life imprisonment, for the alleged crime.
That is why they asked for the transfer to the higher court.
The Fiji Live website reports that a man accused of another crime, and also at the Magistrate's Court, was punched by a man who had mistaken him for susupcted rapist.
Petero Bai's trial is to begin Friday week.
