Federal stimulus money in American Samoa increases

Federal stimulus money in American Samoa has increased federal grant awards in the last fiscal year to more than 166 million US dollars.

A new report on federal grants to Insular Areas, says the money has been increased despite the territory being designated as a high risk grantor.

The report shows a huge drop in grant funding for the local Department of Education for fiscal year 2009, mainly due to the fact American Samoa didn't receive its 2009 Consolidated Grant approval until last month.

The territory was awarded 166.57 million US dollars in fiscal year 2009 from ten federal agencies compared to 134.5 million in the previous fiscal year, from nine agencies.
