PNG bishops call for trickle down of LNG profits

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands is calling on the PNG Government to ensure everyone benefits from the Exxon Mobil liquidified natural gas project.

Development of the 16-billion US dollar project is now underway and it's expected to bring dramatic economic growth to PNG.

The president of the conference, Bishop Francesco Panfilo, says despite earlier projects, basic services such as health and education are still not available to many Papua New Guineans.

But he says if properly handled, this latest project could be a blessing.

"If there is transparency on the part of the Government. If we bishops also remain vigilant. If the people are also aware of what is going on, so that the benefits could really go to our people, because in the past there have been several projects which did not really bring the expected benefits."
