Fiji interim PM hails Somare support

Fiji's interim Prime Minister has welcomed the support he's received from his Papua New Guinean counterpart.

The Fiji Sun reports that Commodore Frank Bainimarama has praised the understanding shown by Sir Michael Somare when responding to New Zealand media queries on Fiji's situation.

During his visit to New Zealand Sir Michael said it was vital that dialogue is maintained with the government in Fiji, and that the Melanesian Spearhead Group presented an opportunity to try and bring Fiji back to the fold.

Commodore Bainimarama says unlike some others in the Pacific, the PNG leader has always been a friend and his statement proves the solidarity of the Melanesian countries.

The Fiji leader called on people in the region to understand what the Government is planning to do for the nation.

Fiji was suspended from the Forum a year ago for reneging on a promise to hold elections.
