The prosecution in French Polynesia has asked for a three-year jail sentence for fraud to be given to the former head of the youth section of the Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party.

Rere Puputauki junior, who is the son of the former GIP intervention force boss, Rere Puputauki, was in the criminal court of Papeete for misspending just under 800,000 US dollars of public funds.

Mr Puputauki was found to have spent money which was to go to youth associations running programmes for underprivileged children.

According to the Nouvelles de Tahiti newspaper, he told the court that he wanted to live in style and spent the funds on paintings, sculptures and first-class trips to Paris and Las Vegas.
