Vanuatu calls for end to Fiji's Forum suspension

3:08 pm on 29 April 2010

Vanuatu says it wants Fiji to be returned as a member of Pacific Islands Forum as soon as possible.

A top foreign ministry official, Jean Sese, made the comment while discussing preparations of the Forum summit in Vanuatu in August.

Mr Sese says, however, at this year's summit Fiji will not be present because of last year's Port Moresby resolution which suspended Fiji from the Forum for the interim regime's refusal to return Fiji to democracy.

He says regional countries should have more dialogue with Fiji and the regional and international community for Fiji's re-integration.

He says Fiji's interim foreign minister was in Port Vila this week and met the prime minister, Edward Natapei, but no details have been released.
