French Polynesia politician calls for broader view on cuts

One of French Polynesia's members of the French assembly, Bruno Sandras, has criticised the expert mission which has recommended deep cuts to the territory's administrative costs in the face of a declining economy.

Mr Sandras says a broader view needs to be taken, adding that those below the poverty line in French Polynesia are still French citizens.

In a statement, Mr Sandras says questions need to be raised about the territory's status and its powers as well as the role of the French state in people's daily life.

He says belonging to the French republic must mean something.
