The Governor of Papua New Guinea's National Capital District says two families have been put into isolation after three people died of cholera in Port Moresby last week.
Local health officials are trying to prevent a major epidemic after the deaths of the three men from the coastal village communities, Hanuabada and Lealea.
Governor Powes Parkop says those suspected of being infected have been isolated.
It was one of the urgent steps taken by one of the local taskforces set up in PNG to respond to potential epidemics after last year's deadly cholera outbreak in northern provinces.
"And the taskforce immediately went into action. We have isolated the two families. we have brought the entire members of the two families to medical check. They've been treated and been discharged. But for the time being, they will be isolated for about three or four days."
Powes Parkop says he has ordered education authorities to shut down schools within the affected areas for a couple of days until the situation had been contained.
