Tonga's Women and Children Crisis Centre says it's vital for the welfare of women that an independent Attorney General and Judicial Services Commission are maintained.

The NGO's spokesperson, Ofa ki-Levuka Guttenbeil Likiliki, says the resignation of John Cauchi as Attorney General was a brave move to highlight the reduced level of accountability and transparency in Tonga.

She says it shows the Government's commitment to independence is highly qualified - it must be on its terms.

Ms Guttenbeil Likiliki says her group believes an independent judiciary is the best way to deal with issues such as domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse.

"For this to happen I think it has been a real wake up call for all of us and it's even more of a concern in the journey that we are on towards political reform and attempts to try to achieve democracy. It seems as if everything is going against us at this time."
