A new cook book featuring many Pacific dishes traditionally cooked in homes has just been launched in New Zealand.

The book titled, Me'a Kai, Food and Flavours of the South Pacific, is by chef Robert Oliver.

He says his team spent two years travelling in Vanuatu, the Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and Tahiti to research the ingredients in popular dishes.

Mr Oliver, who grew up in Fiji and has lived in Samoa, says people wanted to share their food stories.

"That's kind of one of the stories of the book is that there's all this amazing food in homes in the Pacific and only partly translates as to what you can experience as a tourist. And I dont think it's been known as amazing. There's four cuisines in the Pacific Islands, not just the odd ones you hear about, and I don't think the full dimension has been expressed before. We're really happy to be able to pass that amazing Pacific message on."
