The interim government in Fiji has confirmed that it is working towards the formation of a new national intelligence unit.
The Defence Minister says the proposal is in its early stages, but the cabinet has agreed that an intelligence unit is required as part of Fiji's national security strategy.
Ratu Epeli Ganilau has confirmed he believes the unit is needed to help protect the country's borders, and to respond to the increasing threat of terrorism.
But the Minister won't say whether the unit will be used to gather intelligence within Fiji.
"No comment, I think you know very well what it stands for and it doesn't need any explanation on my part. In a nutshell the name itself describes what the organisation is about."
Ratu Epeli Ganilau says he can't say how much the intelligence unit would cost, but says personnel could be recruited from the police force or the military.
