The regime in Fiji has allocated US$1.5 for the purchasing of new vessels.

The navy took over the government shipping service at the end of last month in a move the regime said was aimed at improving services.

Navy Commander Francis Kean told Fiji Broadcasting Corporation that the Shipping Service currently has 3 operational vessels.

He says this has been inadequate.

Commander Kean says the interim government has endorsed the purchase of 6 other vessels.
