Tuvalu encouraged to set aside two seats for women MPs

A workshop in Tuvalu has been told that its parliament should consider a law to create two seats reserved for women.

The consultation in Funafuti was organised by the Department of Women as Tuvalu has no female parliamentarian.

Four parliaments in the Pacific have no women, while Fiji has no parliament.

The Federated States of Micronesia has proposed to set up four new seats reserved for women.

Papua New Guinea, which has one woman MP, has gazetted a bill to reserve 22 seats for women.

In line with French law, assemblies of French Pacific territories have half of the seats filled by women.
