The cannery company, StarKist, says it is eager to work with an American Samoa Government task force to create a concrete plan that will reinvigorate the Territory as a hub for the tuna industry.

KHJ News sought a reaction from the company to Governor Togiola Tulafono's statements on his radio program regarding the cannery's plan to reduce its workforce by up to 800 workers.

StarKist spokesperson, Mary Sestric, says they had reached out to the Governor several times leading up to Don Binotto's trip to American Samoa last week.

She says Mr Binotto also personally phoned the Governor to invite him to attend a closed door meeting last Thursday morning in advance of the company's announcement.

But she says the governor was not available.

Mary Sestric says the company looks forward to working the American to prevent further reductions or closure of StarKist's American Samoa operations.
