American Samoa's LBJ Hospital has a new chief executive officer.

Michael Gerstenberger was CEO of the Southwest Physician Network in Tuscon Arizona and is a former vice president of the Tuscon Medical Center.

He also served as a consultant for a community health care group that built a rural hospital in Mexico.

Mr Gerstenberger says one thing LBJ will be looking at is understanding the needs of their patients and families.

"And do a better job of understanding how well we are addressing those needs and working with the staff and physians in the community to decide what it is we collectively want LBJ to begin to do."

Michael Gerstenberger is on a three year contract instead of the standard two year one.
