MPs in Vanuatu ordered to declared affiliation in spat over party

5:11 pm on 24 May 2010

The Speaker of the Vanuatu Parliament, George Wells, has told Parliament that all 52 MPs must fill out forms declaring their political affiliation.

He says he needs clarification on the status of each MP following the ongoing claims over who leads the country's largest party, the Vanuaaku Pati.

Both the Prime Minister, Edward Natapei and his main rival, Harry Iauko, claim to be the VP president.

Mr Iauko began the session sitting with the Opposition bloc and became the Deputy Opposition Leader, a move which appears to leave Mr Natapei with the support of just 9 MPs in the 52 seat house.

Parliament was then adjourned until Wednesday at the request of Mr Natapei.
