The New Zealand and Niue governments want international hotel groups involved in the expansion of the island's part state-owned Matavai Resort.

Developing the Matavai is a cornerstone of the so-called Hall Report which looked at how to grow Niue's tourism industry.

The New Zealand Foreign Minister, Murray McCully, who commissioned the report, says hotel groups have already expressed an interest.

He says if tourism is to flourish in Niue must be more beds available, particularly around the Matavai.

Mr McCully says this would also be the key to securing a second Air New Zealand flight each week.

"It's the key to having the growth in the attractions that are part of the growing tourism industry. So getting the Matavai boosted to a stage where it plays that cornerstone role and where we've got an international management capability in the hotel is something that we are working on."
