American Samoa Power Authority says forced to raise prices

10:24 am on 28 May 2010

The American Samoa Power Authority says it has no choice but to raise electricity and water prices if it's to maintain the quality of its service.

ASPA says it's done all it can to control its expenses and has been living on borrowed time.

The acting chief executive, Andra Samoa, says at the moment a family of up to five people pays an average of 120 dollars US month for power and water.

She says that will rise by 20 dollars after the first phase of the increase in July.

Ms Samoa says there's never a good time to raise rates and she's asking for public support.
