Small Island States push for binding climate change deal

6:14 pm on 3 June 2010

The Alliance of Small Island States has called on climate change negotiators meeting in Germany to push for a legally-binding outcome.

This goal is consistent with the so-called Bali Action Plan and has become critical in the protection of the most vulnerable countries.

AOSIS is concerned with the consistent lowering of expectations ahead of the next talks due in Cancun.

The Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Yvo de Boer, says last year's Copenhagen meeting may have postponed an outcome for at least a year, but it did not postpone the impacts of climate change.
