American Samoa pushes for felony charges in attack on police

1:23 pm on 18 June 2010

The American Samoan government has filed felony charges against a man accused of assaulting two female police officers with a hammer on Tuesday in Nu'uuli.

Amilale Sailo was charged in the district court with two counts of assault in the first degree and resisting arrest.

This is on top of the public peace disturbance he was charged with yesterday.

The government accuses Sailo of attempting to cause serious physical injuries to the female officers by means of a deadly weapon or a dangerous instrument which is the hammer.

The defendant is also accused of resisting police officers when they tried to detain him.

A district court judge, John Ward, denied bail for the defendant.
