Hawaii has received 1.7 million US dollars in federal funds from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for weather tracking and prediction projects.
The federal grant is focused specifically on efforts to help officials monitor ocean water quality, forecast flooding, predict hazards and track coastal ecosystems.
The Hawaii Islands Ocean Observing System is part of the Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System, one of 11 regional observing systems in the United States.
Hawaii Senator Daniel Akaka says the grant will support development of ocean forecasting systems that help Hawaii protect its environment, prepare for disasters and support industries such as tourism and shipping.
