American Samoa tourism plans new marketing drive

The American Samoa Visitors Bureau says vigorous marketing is needed to attract overseas visitors to the territory's newest tourism project.

The firm Archaeological Consultants of the Pacific is working to identify and map historic sites in the mountains above Fagatogo, Utulei and Fagaalu to develop a heritage tourism trail.

The Executive Director of the American Samoa Visitors Bureau, David Vaeafe, says the venture will create jobs and boost tourism.

He says marketing will play a key part in educating the world about what the territory has to offer.

"We intend to have a vigorous marketing campaign and so far we've spoken with retailers and travel agencies in New Zealand, Australia and the US and airlines and so forth. And further down the track, and hopefully within the next year or so, we'll be appointing representatives in those three markets to represent the destination and so forth."

David Vaeafe says the territory is working closely with counterparts in Samoa in the hope of creating island-hopping opportunities for visitors.
