Fiji bans kava consumption at school

1:22 pm on 28 June 2010

The Fiji interim education minister, Filipe Bole, has banned the consumption of kava in schools.

Mr Bole has told Fijivillage that he has sent a directive to all schools prohibiting the consumption of kava in and around school premises.

He says this is in line with the aim of making Fiji the world's first drug-free and substance abuse-free nation.

Mr Bole says it's not very difficult to detect teachers that consume too much grog, as it can be seen in their faces.

The ministry says it hopes to reduce the number of drugs and substance abuse cases this year by ten percent.
