The party of the Solomon Islands' caretaker Rural Development Minister is calling for funds to be distributed to constituencies through his ministry rather than MPs.
Last week Fred Fono, who's also the caretaker deputy prime minister, said each MP had received more than 800,000 US dollars from several development funds to distribute to their constituencies during the last parliament.
Mr Fono, who is the leader of the Peoples Congress Party, rejects criticism that the funding has not resulted in improvements in rural development.
But he agrees not all MPs have the skills to manage such funding, and says his ministry should take over that responsibility.
"Not every member of parliament are in the same category. Some of them don't even know how to keep proper records so we can not force MPs to be accounting officers or project managers. But they will be responsible with their constituency committees to identify what the priority sectors are."
Fred Fono says if funding was decentralised to provincial governments it would remain in provincial headquarters.
