An unknown gunman in New Caledonia has injured two police officers when he fired at their vehicle.

The incident happened near Canala on the main island's east coast where the police arrived to arrest a man suffering from mental health problems.

The individual had used a sword to threaten nurses trying to assist.

As the police car was leaving the Kanak village, the gunman in the bush fired at the car and broke glass which injured the police officers.

A search is now under way for the person who fired the weapon.
