The Fiji interim Government has issued a decree requiring phone users to register their details.
The move is to allow people who make bogus calls to be traced.
The Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum, says a significant number of telephone users are misusing the service.
He says with the Compulsory Registration of Customers for Telephone Services Decree 2010 in place, bogus and threatening calls, including bomb threats, will be a thing of the past.
The Fiji Live website reports the Minister saying bogus callers have impersonated government ministers to obtain privileges and have threatened them to try and stop them carrying out their work.
Phone users will be required to give their full names, birth date, photo identification, home address, and parent's signature if under 18 years of age.
Failure to do so will lead to the connection being suspended and the customer and company involved may also be fined.
